PISCATAWAY, N.J. – The SKWC community continues to roll, as Rutgers earned dual wins at Penn (22-14) and against Rider (31-5) over the weekend. The Scarlet Knights are now 7-1 heading into the Big Ten portion of their dual schedule, as RU will open conference action on Friday night against No. 23 Indiana at Jersey Mike’s Arena.
Rutgers Completes Jersey Sweep with Dominant Win over Rider
No. 14 Rutgers wrestling (7-1) defeated Rider (2-4), 31-5, on Sunday afternoon in front of 3,348 fans at Jersey Mike’s Arena. The win marked the third consecutive time the Scarlet Knights have beaten both the Broncs and Princeton in the same season dating back to the 2021-22 campaign.
No. 13 Mitch Moore (141) and No. 27 Jackson Turley (174) picked up falls, Michael Cetta (149) worked a ranked decision over No. 22 Quinn Kinner and No. 7 Yaraslau Slavikouski (HWT) and No. 8 John Poznanski (197) added bonus against their in-state foe.
RU has now won the past 10 meetings with Rider dating back to 2009, as the program has now secured seven dual victories before Big Ten Conference action each of the last three seasons. Rutgers will now head into its conference schedule, which includes matchups with six ranked foes.
“We have a good enough lineup to really wrestle in this conference right now and we have some star power too so that makes it exciting,” said head coach Scott Goodale. “These are going to be great dual meets and you know how much I enjoy the dual meets.”
How it Happened
- After an upset loss from No. 2 Dean Peterson (125) to open the match, the Scarlet Knights went three-for-three from 133 through 149 pounds. No. 9 Dylan Shawver (133) faced two-time NCAA qualifier Richie Koehler and landed two takedowns to muscle a 10-4 decision.
- Moore followed against Will Betancourt, recording eight near-fall points before working a tilt for the second-period fall. His third pin of the season put Rutgers up 9-3 on Rider through the first three matches of the afternoon.
- Cetta faced No. 22 Richie Koehler in the match of the afternoon. Trailing 6-5 with 20 seconds left, Cetta hit a headlock for the takedown and held on in the closing seconds for an 8-6 decision.
- A loss from No. 33 Andrew Clark (157) before the break made it 11-5 at intermission, as both teams were deducted a team point for unsportsmanlike conduct at the conclusion of 157 pounds.
- Rutgers continued to excel out of the locker room, as Anthony White (165) earned a 4-1 decision before Turley pinned Michael Wilson in the first period. Turley’s bonus points put Rutgers up 20-5.
- With the dual all but secured, No. 19 Brian Soldano (184) added a 7-1 decision over Isaac Dean, while back-to-back major decisions from Poznanski and Slavikouski made it a 31-5 final.

Rutgers rallies for road win at penn
No. 14 Rutgers wrestling (6-1, 0-0) defeated RV Penn (0-2), 22-14, on Saturday night at the Palestra in Philadelphia. Down 14-3 through their first five bouts, the Scarlet Knights rallied with five consecutive wins from 197 through 141 pounds to secure their sixth dual win of the season.
No. 9 Dylan Shawver (133) delivered a buzzer-beating takedown for a 9-8 decision over No. 11 Michael Colaiocco, No. 13 Mitch Moore added a decision over No. 11 CJ Composoto and tech falls from No. 7 Yaraslau Slavikouski (HWT) and No. 8 John Poznanski (197) powered RU to the road dual victory over the Quakers.
“I’m proud of the way we fought tonight,” said head coach Scott Goodale. “It was a gritty win and I love those kinds of wins. It was a lunch-pail mentality tonight and that’s how I thought we closed out tonight’s match.”
Saturday’s victory marked the 215th for Goodale as head coach. The program’s winningest coach ranks fifth among head coaches in the Big Ten.
How it Happened
- With an untraditional start at 149 pounds, Michael Cetta opened the dual with Andy Troczynski and landed the first takedown of the night midway through the first period. Cetta sealed the win with a four-point tilt from the top position in the third period, helping Rutgers to a quick 3-0 lead.
- The Quakers would respond with four consecutive wins from 157 through 184 pounds to own a 14- 3 lead with five bouts to go.
- The Scarlet Knights began to take momentum back thanks to Poznanski, who landed four takedowns and hit a four-point near fall on No. 25 Cole Urbas for an 18-1 tech fall. Slavikouski followed with seven takedowns on John Stout for a 21-5 tech fall, with the back-to-back bonus-point victories making it just a 14-13 advantage for Penn.
- No. 2 Dean Peterson followed against Ryan Miller. After he conceded an early takedown, Peterson landed two of his own to grit out a 10-4 decision and gave Rutgers back its lead at 16-14 with two matches against top-15 opponents remaining.
- In the match of the night, Shawver faced Colaiocco and trailed the Quaker 7-3 through two periods after Colaiocco added a takedown and two near fall in period two. After both traded scoring actions down the stretch, Colaiocco held an 8-6 advantage with 10 seconds to go before Shawver caught Colaiocco with a single leg. Both would scramble until Shawver caught Colaiocco at the buzzer. Review would confirm a 9-8 win for Shawver and a 19-14 lead for the Scarlet Knights.
- Moore closed the dual with a 5-0 decision against Composto, using a takedown in the first period for his second ranked win of the season. The decision earned RU a 22-14 win over Penn heading into Sunday’s match with Rider.
