SMYRNA, Del. – Shane Cartagena-Walsh (184) secured an individual title to highlight action for Rutgers wrestling at the National Collegiate Open on Sunday in Smyrna, Delaware. Cartagena-Walsh was one of four Scarlet Knights to place at the open, which included a runner-up result from John O’Donnell (HWT) and third-place finishes from Michael Toranzo (197) and Max Hermes (Unatt.-141).
Cartagena-Walsh produced back-to-back bonus-point victories to advance to the 184-pound final against Zyan Hall (Navy). With a neutral start in the second period, Cartagena-Walsh landed a takedown with one minute to go in period two for a 3-1 lead. Cartagena-Walsh then forced a stall call on Hall to lock up his individual title.
O’Donnell picked up two decisions to advance to his title match before he withdrew due to injury. After an open-round loss, Toranzo wrestled back with four consecutive wins, including a 4-3 decision over Eric Carlson (Cornell) for third. After he lost in the semifinals at 141 pounds to Evan Mougalian (Penn), Hermes went 2-0 on the backside of the bracket and earned a 16-2 major decision over Ethan Levin (Bucknell) for a bronze.

No. 14 Rutgers wrestling finished its dual season 12-5, including four Big Ten Conference victories. Several Scarlet Knights will compete in this weekend’s The Open Zingo Nationals, held Sunday, March 3 in Somerset. Rutgers will wrestle at the 2024 Big Ten Championships from March 9-10 in College Park, Maryland.
