TOMS RIVER, N.J. – No. 17 Rutgers wrestling (3-1) split its matches at the Journeymen Jersey Jostle on Sunday in Toms River. The Scarlet Knights defeated LIU (1-3), 37-3, before losing to No. 6 NC State (3-0), 24-13, during the showcase event at the RWJBarnabas Health Arena.
The Scarlet Knights won 13 out of 20 matches across its two duals, adding six wins by bonus (four tech falls, a pin and a major decision). No. 6 Dylan Shawver (133), No. 12 John Poznanski (197) and Andrew Barbosa (165) all won two matches on the day. Competing in his first collegiate matches, Barbosa added a ranked victory to his resume with an 8-6 decision over No. 20 Derek Fields from NC State.
Rutgers was in full control during its first dual of the day, winning nine out of 10 bouts against the Sharks. The impressive start included five wins by bonus, as No. 22 Joseph Olivieri (141) pinned Devin Matthews while Shawver, Poznanski and John O’Donnell (HWT) all registered tech falls. Eric Freeman (174) added a major decision in his first start of the young season.
The duals marked the collegiate debut for (165), who tallied a 12-6 decision over James Johnston. Classmate Conner Harer produced two minutes of riding time in his 6-1 decision over Brayden Roberts to move to 3-0 on the season. No. 33 Michael Cetta (149) and Shane Cartagena-Walsh (184) both provided decisions in their respective bouts.
RU followed with four victories over the Wolfpack – who entered Sunday ranked No. 6 in the country in the latest NWCA Coaches Poll. Barbosa picked off No. 20 Fields by 8-6 decision. Poznanski recorded his second tech fall of the night, Shawver added a decision over Troy Hohman, and Andrew Clark (157) dazzled the crowd with last-second takedown for a win over Koy Buesgens.
