No. 17 Rutgers wrestling moved to 8-2 on the season, delivering road wins over Clarion, Gardner-Webb and Kent State over the weekend. The Scarlet Knights won 26 out of 30 bouts across its three dual wins, adding five pins with falls from Brian Soldano (2), John O’Donnell, John Poznanski and Jackson Turley.
Match 1: No. 17 Wrestling Defeats Clarion, 38-6
CLARION, Pa. – No. 17 Rutgers wrestling (6-2) defeated Clarion (0-4), 38-6, on Friday night in Clarion, Pennsylvania. The Scarlet Knights used a 9-1 match split and six bonus-point victories to pick up their third consecutive dual win of the season.
No. 15 John Poznanski (197) worked his first fall of the season, No. 18 Dean Peterson (125), No. 24 Joseph Olivieri (141) and No. 29 Shane Cartagena-Walsh (184) earned tech falls, while No. 9 Dylan Shawver (133) and No. 26 Anthony White (165) produced major decisions against the Golden Eagles.
Peterson jumped out with two takedowns in the first minute of action, closing the opening period with a 9-3 lead. Peterson followed with a takedown in the second and added two in the final 90 seconds for a 19-4 tech fall over Travis Clawson.
Shawver went back-and-forth with Scott Johnson in the first two periods before he settled in with two takedowns in the final period for a 15-7 major decision. Back-to-back bonus-point victories gave Rutgers a 9-0 lead through its first two matches.
Olivieri faced Gianna Silvestri and was in full control throughout courtesy of six takedowns in five minutes of 50 seconds of action. Olivieri landed three of those in the final period, with his third wrapping up a 19-3 tech fall.
Alex Nini (149) made his dual varsity debut and landed a quick takedown and rode out Kyle Schickel for a 3-0 lead through the first period. Nini then landed a quick escape, takedown and four near-fall points via a headlock for an 11-0 lead before Schickel rallied with a takedown and near-fall of his own. The back-and-forth match resulted in a 14-12 decision for Nini, who collected 3:17 of riding time to hold on to the win.
No. 33 Conner Harer (157) won his third match in a row with a 5-0 decision over John Altieri, using a takedown in the third period and riding time for the win. His decision made it 20-0 Rutgers at the midway point.
White also entered the night on a winning streak and earned his fourth consecutive victory with a 17-3 major decision over Welsey Barnes.
After Clarion picked up its first win of the night on a pin, RU closed the dual with three consecutive wins. Cartagena-Walsh earned his fourth tech fall of the season with a 19-4 win over Patrick Cutchember, Poznanski pinned Ethan Wiant in the opening period, and John O’Donnell (HWT)

KENT, Ohio. – No. 17 Rutgers wrestling (8-2) delivered wins over Gardner Webb (0-4) and Kent State (1-5) on Saturday in Kent, Ohio. The Scarlet Knights delivered a 32-6 victory over the Bulldogs before securing a 42-3 win over the Golden Flashes.
RU won 17 out of 20 matches across its two duals, including 11 wins by bonus. Brian Soldano (184) registered two pins, No. 21 Jackson Turley (174) and John O’Donnell (HWT) each added a fall, while No. 18 Dean Peterson (125), No. 15 John Poznanski (197), No. 26 Anthony White and No. 33 Conner Harer all had tech falls.
No. 24 Joseph Olivieri picked up a 4-0 decision over No. 25 Todd Carter to add a ranked win to his resume.
Rutgers has now won five consecutive duals heading into the New Year, as the Scarlet Knights next compete at the Midlands Championships from Dec. 29-30 in Hoffman Estates, Illinois.
