MINNEAPOLIS – No. 12 Rutgers wrestling (11-5, 3-3) lost at No. 8 Minnesota (8-1, 4-1), 28-9, on Sunday afternoon in Minneapolis. No. 9 Dylan Shawver (133) and No. 20 Andrew Clark (149) each picked up a ranked win, while No. 10 Dean Peterson (125) added a decision in front of 2,909 fans at Maturi Pavilion.
After the Scarlet Knights won their first bout at 149 pounds, the Gophers earned victories in their next six matches, including four wins by bonus, to secure the dual. Sunday marked RU’s fifth match against a top 25 foe in its last six appearances and its sixth against a top 10 opponent this season.
The match started at 149 pounds, with Clark delivering a 9-7 decision over No. 20 Drew Roberts. Clark collected just under two minutes of riding time in his bout, adding two takedowns and a reversal for his third ranked win of the season. Clark’s decision made it 3-0 Rutgers.
The Scarlet Knights dropped their next four matches before intermission, but not without some tight decisions. No. 30 Conner Harer (157) lost a tough 1-0 bout to No. 8 Tommy Askey, while No. 21 Jackson Turley (174) dropped a back-and-forth 4-2 decision to No. 25 Clayton Whiting. Bonus points from the Gophers at 165 and 184 pounds gave UM a 15-3 advantage at the midpoint.
PJ Casale (197) got the call out of the break against No. 9 Isaiah Salazar. The Little Falls, New Jersey, native landed a takedown on Salazar in the second period but ultimately lost by 16-6 major decision. No. 8 Yaraslau Slavikouski (HWT) followed against two-time NCAA Champion and 2020 Olympic gold medalist Gable Steveson, losing by fall in the third period to put the dual out of reach at 25-3 with three bouts remaining.
Peterson faced Brandon Morvari, moving to 17-3 on the season courtesy of an 8-2 decision. Shawver followed against No. 18 Tyler Wells, using takedowns in the first and third periods for his 8-2 decision.
No. 13 Joseph Olivieri (141) closed the dual against No. 8 Van VomBaur. Olivieri landed a takedown early in the first period and went back-and-forth with VomBaur – an All-American last season – before losing by 12-5 decision.
