COLLEGE PARK, Md. – No. 12 Rutgers wrestling (12-5, 4-3) defeated Maryland (8-8, 3-3), 21-20, on Friday night in College Park. Despite a five-five match split, the Scarlet Knights used three tech falls to secure their 10th consecutive victory over the Terrapins in Big Ten Conference action.
No. 10 Dean Peterson (125), No. 17 John Poznanski (197) and Andrew Barbosa (165) all delivered tech falls, No. 19 Andrew Clark (149) added a ranked win to his resume, and No. 13 Joseph Olivieri (141) added a decision to help RU to its fourth Big Ten win of the season.
Peterson wasted no time against Tyler Garvin, opening the dual with four takedowns in the first period for a quick 12-3 lead. Peterson added three additional takedowns down the stretch, finishing with a 22-6 tech fall. Peterson’s bonus points provided Rutgers with a quick 5-0 lead.
No. 9 Dylan Shawver (133) faced No. 11 Braxton Brown in a back-and-forth bout that resulted in a 6-3 win for Brown. But The Scarlet Knights followed with back-to-back decisions. Olivieri landed takedowns in the first and third periods against Dario Lemus for a 9-5 decision, while Clark’s takedown and rideout in the third period against No. 32 Kal Miller provided him with a 6-1 decision. Both wins put RU up 11-3 through four bouts.
No. 29 Conner Harer (157) closed out the first half with a 10-0 loss to No. 6 Ethan Miller, but Rutgers took an 11-7 lead into intermission.
Barbosa made is fifth dual appearance of the season out of the break, facing Alex Uryniak. Barbosa was the aggressor throughout, landing four takedowns, a reversal and three near-fall points against the Terrapin. Barbosa’s final takedown of the night with four seconds left in the match secured him an 18-3 tech fall and gave the Scarlet Knights a 16-7 advantage.
Back-to-back wins from Maryland at 174 and 184 pounds made it just a 16-14 dual before Poznanski sealed the dual with his win over Chase Mielnik. Poznanski had three takedowns in the third period, and continued to attack Mielnik throughout before he earned the 21-4 tech fall, making it 21-14 Rutgers ahead of heavyweight.
With the dual secured, John O’Donnell (HWT) earned the start against No. 12 Seth Nevills, landing a takedown in the first period before his loss.

Rutgers returns home for its final two matches of the season, beginning with Michigan State on Friday, Feb. 14 at Jersey Mike’s Arena. The Scarlet Knights also host Penn on Wednesday, Feb. 19 to close the regular season.
